The Phils 7 game winning streak would end this afternoon as the Marlins young arms were able to shut down The Phillies hot bats. A late 9th inning rally would give fans hope of yet another miraculous comeback, and as of late the Phils have given us no reason not to believe in such a thing. The Fightin's have lived up to there name this season and have fought back over 25 times in course of the last few months. But it wasn't meant to be as the Phils would go down quietly with the last 3 batters going down 1-2-3.

It was a rough one from the gate today as Joey Wendle got the Marlins started with a first pitch base hit down the right field line that would ultimately lead to the Fish loading up the bases in the first inning, all to be shut down by Kyle Gibson. Speaking of Kyle Gibson he went 6.0 Innings today allowing just 2 earned runs (1 unearned) on 6 hits. The first of those three runs came after two Phillies fielding errors from Jean Segura (lost the ball in the sun) and Rhys Hoskins (Dropped a routine grounder) respectively, when Joey Wendle would get his second hit of the day scoring Lewin Diaz. It would become quite obvious soon that Marlins pitcher Edward Cabrera wasn't just some push over as he continued to mow through the Phils lineup, and any time the Fightin's made some sort of push he'd shut them down just as fast as they started.

It was at this point in the game where Kyle Schwarber would exit the game shortly after getting walked, Brandon Marsh would enter for him leaving Phillies fans everywhere holding their breath while concurrently scratching their heads. After the game it was announced Schwarber has a Mild Calf Strain and would be listed as Day to Day going into the Phils weekend series vs the Mets. Fast Forward to the top of the 6th where the Marlins would go on a two out rally, breaking Kyle Gibsons streak of 12 consecutive batters retired. It would begin on a Wild Pitch that would score Nick Fortes making it 2-0, shortly after a Lewin Diaz double would score Charles LeBlanc making it 3-0 Fish. Nick Nelson, Corey Knebel, and Connor Brogdon would allow a combined one hit through the final 3 innings and that would leave it up to The Phillies offense to deliver in the bottom of the 9th vs Marlins closer Tanner Scott. After back to back Castellanos and Stott singles Jean Segura would walk loading the bases with none away. In a curious move Manager Rob Thomson would have Shortstop Edmundo Sosa pinch hit for Catcher Garrett Stubbs who hit a walk off home run against vs Tanner Scott just weeks before, Sosa would strike out swinging at a pitch in the dirt that would have walked in a run. Matt Vierling and Brandon Marsh would follow it up with two quick outs to end the ballgame and the Phils would go down quietly to end the ballgame.

All together this was a tough pill to swallow for the Phils especially after going on a tear winning 7 straight, but in the course of 162 games you are bound to get games like these. Now the Phils look ahead to the weekend where they will embark on a pivotal 3 game series with the New York Mets. The series begins tomorrow night up in Flushing Queens where the Phils will have to go up against the likes of Max Scherzer on Friday Night Baseball...
