It took 139 years but the Phillies have eclipsed the 10,000 win marker, the Phillies were the oldest franchise in Baseball to not do so to the point. The Phillies got win number 10,000 in a “Non-Phillies” type of way. Meaning it was a relatively easy game for the Phils, who were able to flounder the opposing Reds 11-4. Kyle Gibson pitched well on the mound through 6 innings, but it was the Phillies offense; that seemingly broke out of their slumping ways that trumped the last week. The Phils hit a combined 5 home runs tonight, tying their season total for a single game. Now we have to hope that the offense can keep the hot bats going into this weekend’s crucial 4 game set with the vaunted New York Mets.
The Phils started the game with more of the same as of late, a Garrett Stubbs walk would load the bases in the 2nd inning with just 1 away and Matt Vierling coming to the plate. But at this point, you can probably guess how that turned out. Vierling would go down swinging Stott would make a 1-3 groundout to the pitcher to end the inning leaving the bases jacked. The 3rd inning brought about some optimism as Nick Castellanos and Darick Hall would go back to back putting the Phillies up 2-0 early. Kyle Gibson however struggled to hold onto the lead and would give up a pair of back-to-back home runs himself. The first being an absolute nuke off the bat of Jake Farley, and the second which was a ball to center that would just clear the wall. But the attention quickly shifted to a wincing Brandon Marsh out in Right Center. After a leaping attempt to catch India’s home run ball Marsh would fall awkwardly and would lay on the warning track in center wincing in pain for a good 3 minutes before being helped to his feet and eventually walking off the field with athletic trainers. After the game manager, Rob Thomson would tell reporters Marsh was diagnosed with a Bone Bruise but will be getting a 2nd opinion and MRI from Phillies doctors tomorrow. Shifting our focus back to the game, in the top of the 4th inning Rhys Hoskins would smack an opposite-field 3-run shot to right putting the Fightin Phils up. It’s pretty much safe to say it was all Phillies from then on out. Kyle Gibson would get through the next 3 innings unscathed and the Phils would go on to score 6 more runs, 2 coming from a Rhys Hoskins nuke to dead center that bounced off the batter’s eye. And 3 more coming off the bat of Garrett Stubbs late in the 9th inning all but sealing the game for the Fightins.
It may have taken 139 years, but 10,000 wins is surely nothing to scoff at. And besides, the Phillies will take a win anywhere they can right about now, the Phils have one more against the Reds tomorrow afternoon when Ranger Saurez will take the bump against Reds Lefty Nick Lodolo. Lodolo boasts a 4.72 Earned-Run Average across 47.2 innings this season and the Phillies will look to earn the sweep against him tomorrow, But for now good morning, good afternoon, and goodnight, and of course Go Phils!
