Pathetic, abysmal, Disgusting, Embarrassing, Putrid, feel free to leave a few more negative adjectives in the comments for me. Tonight’s game may have a pretty good shot to end up as the Phillies worst performance of the entire season, and that is saying a lot when you consider some of the games they took part in back in April and May. The Phillies just had nothing going tonight, starting on the bump where Aaron Nola looked just pitiful. Then to the offense who could hit a grapefruit down the middle of the plate. Let’s take a look at what made this game just that horrible if you can even bare read.
The night started off just how it ended; sloppy. Brandon Nimmo would lead off the 1st with a single, Fransisco Lindor and Pete Alonso would follow suit making it a 1-0 ballgame headed to the bottom of the 1st. The Phillies would go down 1-2-3 in their half of the first, but Nola would set down the Mets in order on just 3 pitches, providing hope that he would settle in and revert back to his usual self. Well, he didn’t, just one inning later Pete Alonso would deliver on a 2 run moonshot to left. Jeff McNeil would follow it up with an RBI single making it 4-0 Mets. Nola would continue his up and down play into the 4th where he would go right through the bottom of the Mets order unscathed. But the 5th inning would soon bring us one of the worst defensive plays we’ve seen all season from this Phillies team. When Fransisco Lindor attempted to steal second base he would draw the throw from JT Realmuto leaving home plate open, the Mets would quickly put on the double steal as Starling Marte would cruise home making it a 5-0 ballgame and all but demolishing the Phillies already lacking confidence. The bottom of the 5th would bring the Phillies some hope as a Kyle Schwarber single to centerfield would bring home two runs with none away. But the Phillies would neglect to score any more runs in the inning, and in the game as a whole. The game would remain relatively quiet until the 7th inning when Andrew Bellatti would allow a Brett Baty single to score 2 more for the Mets making it a 7-2 ballgame. The Phils would go down with a whimper as the game came to a close, a small bright spot was the return of Sam Coonrod. Coonrod was injured early in Spring Training and had just recently made his recovery, he got through 2 innings of 2-hit ball and looked good cracking 97 on the Fastball.
Tonight was horrible, there are no if’s and’s or but’s about it. The Phillies looked, well you saw my long list of negative adjectives already. But honestly, this trend of going down easy to the Mets needs to stop, we act like this team has a playoff spot locked up. The last time I checked there are 3 wildcard spots and 4 teams still trying to make it in, and I’m sure that Milwaukee would love to come up and snatch the 3rd spot from the Phils. This is a wake-up call and the Phils need to take it and run with it, tomorrow they have 2 against the Mets and they have to make them count. Zach Wheeler will tackle the mound for game 1 against Mets Righty Trevor Williams, while Bailey Falter with tow the rubber in game two on Saturday Night Baseball. For now you know the drill, good morning, good afternoon, and good night, and of course Go Phils!
