SOUTH PHILADELPHIA - You can’t win them all, coming into today’s game this one may have seemed like a gimmie. With the Phils seemingly rolling, winners of 6 in a row and going for the elusive 7-0 season sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
But young right-hander Roansy Contreras had other thoughts, the 22-year-old Dominican product went 5 scoreless innings en route to his 4th win of the season.
It also didn’t help that the young jovial Pirates offense had it going from the start, as top prospect Oneil Cruz led the game off with a triple to right field which would end up being the first of the Pirate’s three, three base hits. Ke’Bryan Hayes would single scoring Cruz and that would be all the Pirates needed to take down the Phils today.
Noah Syndergaard would seem to set in for the next few innings, but a Greg Allen bunt would cause some trickeration scoring Tucupita Marcano making it a 2-0 Pirates ballgame.
The real trouble would begin in the top of the 6th after a leadoff triple from Bryan Reynolds, Michael Chavis would single to left making it a 3-0 game. Next a Marcano single to Segura resulted in all runners being safe after Segura would throw it home to no avail. Finally after a Madris double to right Syndergaard’s day would be done. Through five and two-thirds, Thor would allow five runs on 9 hits and a walk with five K’s.
Nelson, Brogdon, and Coonrod would come in order and set down the Pirates with ease each time.
As for the Phillies offense, they would muster only 4 hits today all of which being singles. Bryce and JT each got a hit apiece while Matt Vierling got two for himself.
In a season of 162 games, you are bound to have stinkers such as this. This loss shouldn’t prove to be an issue for the Phils, but we will see how they respond as they head out west to Arizona and then San Fransisco for their final big road trip of the season. Tomorrow’s game starts at 9:40 out in Phoenix at Chase Field on NBCSP and 94.1WIP. But for now, good morning, good afternoon, and good night, and of course Go Phils!
