HARRISON NEW JERSEY - Your Philadelphia Union are officially on the very top of the MLS table. With tonight’s win, the Union have been catapulted in front of LAFC in the race for the Supporters Sheild with a record 60 points on the season.
During the Union’s win streak that has spanned over the past few weeks, media and critics alike have taken jabs at Jim Curtin’s squad for “picking on the bad teams”. Many said that the Union had taken advantage of a lull in their schedule by beating up on bad clubs. Well, I think opinions may change after tonight’s 2-0 shutout over the 3rd place New York Red Bulls.
While the Union have taken advantage of some bad clubs in MLS over the past few weeks, something we should note is how they beat them. That being in convincing fashion, the Union have had one 7-0 win and two 6-0 wins this year. Not to mention multiple more games where they have defeated their opponent by 2 or more scores. It is hard enough to win a game in Soccer, forget winning by substantial margins.
Tonight the Boys in Blue truly showed us they can handle their own quite easily verse other playoff teams like New York. Goals were supplied by Mikael Uhre (11), and Daniel Gazdag (18). Gazdag is one of the top scorers in all of MLS this season and is looking to capture the MVP award come season’s end. Lets also not forget Andre Blake who played yet another masterclass in net with his 13th clean sheet of the season.
It truly is a privilege to be able to turn this Union team on every week and watch a great product. This is a club that is winning a lot of games and having a ton of fun doing it, god knows what the future holds for this squad. Whether it be a Supporters Sheild or maybe even an MLS Cup we will just have to wait and see. The Union will now look ahead to next weekend when they will face Orlando City back at the electric Subaru Park. But for now good morning, good afternoon, and good night, and of course Go Union!
