There may not be a player on this Phillies roster who wants to win more than Jean Segura. Segura is the longest-tenured MLB player to have not made the postseason. It is easy to see his desire to win in his play night in and night out. Tonight was no different as Segura blasted a line drive base hit into the right field gap that would score Bryce Harper from second winning the ballgame for the Phillies who most desperately needed a morale boost such as this.

Coming into tonight the Phillies were on a 1-5 skid after losing two of 3 to a lowly Diamonabcks, then being swept by former manager Gabe Kapler’s San Francisco Giants. And after a day of rain and dreary skies across the Delaware Valley, Citizens Bank Park looked like a ghost town with just a few scattered groups of fans that came out to see their struggling Fightin Phils. Seemingly with their back against the walls, on one of the lousiest days of the year with nearly no fans in their own ballpark the Phillies prevailed. Much in part to one Aaron Nola. Who, coming off easily the worst outing of his career where he allowed 8 runs in 4 innings against the Diamondbacks, Came out and dealed through 6.2 innings of work. Noles had all his stuff working tonight racking up 10 K’s and recording his 200th strikeout of the season while he was at it. Sadly it couldn’t be that easy as Rob Thomson would decide to bring in a struggling Brad Hand for Jose Alvarado who faced just one batter in the top of the 7th. Hand would go just one-third of an inning allowing a run to tie the ballgame up at two a piece. I probably should also mention that the Phillies were just a few inches away from losing this ballgame. As Alec Bohm hit a sac fly out to left field in the 6th a streaking Edmundo Sosa headed for the plate just to be stopped dead in his tracks by Marlins Catcher Nick Fortes. After further review, it would be determined that Fortes was blocking the plate by a matter of inches, which intern awarded the Phillies the at the time go ahead run putting them up 2-1.

It was really nice to see such a valiant effort from a Phillies team that almost looked prepared to throw in the towel after such a deflating west coast trip. I truly believe that this team is playoff ready and I think they will prove it to all of us in these upcoming weeks. Starting tomorrow night when they get set for game 2 vs the Marlins at 6:45 back at CBP and hopefully under the cover of some better skies. But for now good morning, good afternoon, and good night, and of course Go Phils!
