When your team hasnt been to the postseason in nearly 11 years, it starts to show. Teams like the Yankees, Dodgers, Cardinals, and Astros don’t give you what the Philadelphia Phillies will give you. Because with those teams you know what you’re going to get, that being a consistent 80-100 win total, a division title, and maybe even a Pennant or a World Series. But when you turn on the Phillies you never know what you will see on any given night. Because every single game is a different battle that needs to be fought, and every single game means just that much more to the players, coaches, and especially the fans. Tonight was yet another hard-nosed, hard-fought game by one scrappy Phillies squad.
It’s beginning the become more of a positive reaction among Phillies fans when they see that Bailey Falter is listed as the team’s starting pitcher for the game. Falter; since being called up from AAA for the 4th time this year, has won 5 straight games and boasted a 2.72 ERA while he was at it. Which is a big change from the instant feeling of despondency many fans felt when hearing that the young Southpaw would be towing the rubber for a particular game even earlier this season. But tonight Falter continued his torrid streak going 5.1 IP and allowing just 2 runs. But it is safe to say that despite Falter’s efforts, Edmundo Sosa may just be the number one reason the Phillies won tonight’s ballgame. Sosa, went 3-3 with a home run, double, and three RBIs not to mention a killer tag on a throwout by JT Realmuto that would turn into one of the most beautiful double plays we’ve seen from this Phil’s defense all year. Headed into the 9th Rob Thomson’s streak of head-scratching bullpen decisions would continue as he decided to bring in Connor Brogdon who pitched last night for Jose Alverado who had a 1-2-3 8th inning with only 8 pitches. Though I can see the reasoning behind why Thomson may have made this choice, it still serves as an interesting decision by the Phillies skipper. As usual, it got dicey late as Connor Brogdon would allow a deep shot to right from Jacob Stallings making it only a one-run game with none away in the bottom of the 9th. However, the Phillies would traverse their way through yet another rough late frame and win the ballgame 4-3.
We say it a lot but it truly is never easy being a Phillies fan, it gets rough but it’s all worth it in the end right? The Phillies have one more left in this 3 game set with the Fish which will take place tomorrow night a 6:45 back under the lights at CBP. Kyle Gibson will take the hill against NL Cy Young favorite Sandy Alcantara as the Phils look to sweep the Marlins out of Philly. But for now good morning, good afternoon, and good night, and of course Go Phils!
