SOUTH PHILADELPHIA - While we are all mad at the Phillies about tonight’s loss, we must give credit where credit is due, That being the Miami Marlin’s offense. Trailing 5-4 going into the 9th it would have been easy for the young Marlins bats to throw in the towel and get ready for the plane ride back to South beach. But they didn’t, instead, they fought back and took down a Phillies team that was taking them for granted.
Kyle Gibson has easily been the Phillies most oscillating pitcher this season, which is saying a lot considering the extremes we’ve seen the Phillies staff hit at various points in the year. You can call me superstitious for this but when I saw Gibson coming off such a bad game last time out I thought he would have been poised for a good outing tonight. Boy could I not have been more wrong, Through 5 innings Gibson allowed 4 runs on 9 hits with just 2 strikeouts. Luckily the Phillies offense was able to keep pace, as a solo shot from Nick Maton followed up by a JT ground-out sacrifice, Bryson Stott double and finally an Alec Bohm triple would make it a 5-4 Phillies ballgame. And it all seemed to be smooth sailing from then on as Vinny Nittolli, Sam Coonrod, and Brad Hand all came in succession and set the Marlins down easily. The problems came when the Phillies brought in the pitcher many would believe to be the least likely culprit of any blow opportunities. However, David Robertson would come in the 9th inning and allow the Marlins to blow it open. First, an error by Rhys Hoskins would allow Bryan De La Cruz to score tying the game at 5 a piece, then a Brian Anderson single would score Joey Wendle putting the Fish ahead for good. As the Phillies would go down quietly in their half of the 9th when Jean Segura would ground into a double play to end the ballgame.
Losses like these suck, I mean any loss sucks but ones like this when you feel like the team could have easily done something to change the outcome really suck. The Phillies had this game in hand and it came down to one crappy defensive play that cost them the entire game. However, looking on the bright side the Phillies took 2 of 3 from the Marlins and will now look to take care of the Washington Nationals as they head to Philly for a 3-game weekend series, starting tomorrow night at CBP. But for now good morning, good afternoon, and good night, and of course Go Phils!
