MIAMI FLORIDA - Just as it began to look like the Phillies may waste Kyle Gibson’s first quality start in what felt like months because of a dormant offense, Bryce Harper and company came through. The MV3 began the charge with a game-tying solo shot in the top of the 6th, and it was all Phillies from then on.
Things have looked bleak for Kyle Gibson as of late, posting a 4.75 ERA in his last seven starts. After going six innings, allowing just one run on six hits we got some hope that there may still be something left in the tank for the 34-year-old. And luckily such a quality start by Gibson wasn’t wasted. As the 6th inning began, the Phillies offense awoke with it. First, it was a game-tying solo shot from Bryce Harper, and then JT Realmuto would give the Phils the lead as Edward Cabrera would let up back-to-back home runs. Soon enough a Jean Segura double followed by a 7th inning three-run shot from JT (his second of the day) would set the Phillies up in prime position with a 6-1 lead. As usual, the bullpen came in and took care of the opposition with relative ease. It was particularly nice to see Zach Eflin make his return to the bump, Eflin went an inning and set the Marlins down 1-2-3 with under 10 pitches.
This was yet another good confidence booster for the Phillies as they’ve now won another series with the Marlins down in the dungeon that is LoanDepot Park. We saw some strong pitching, while also getting a good dosage of offensive production. All in all, these are the types of wins you love to see from a playoff squad. The Phils now hold a 2.5-game lead over the idle Padres and a full 4-game lead over Milwaukee. Perhaps the most important number to keep an eye on now is the magic number 16, which means a combination of 16 Phillies wins and Milwaukee losses will put the Phillies in the postseason for the first time since 2011. But for now wherever you are good morning, good afternoon, and good night, and of course Go Phils!
