SOUTH PHILADELPHIA - it was an emotional day for many as Doug Pederson returned to the Linc for the first time after his firing following the 2020 season. But the Birds didn’t let any emotions get in the way of shutting the Jaguars down.
However, before the Birds seemingly took over the game come the second quarter. We saw a potent Eagles team bend and nearly break through a turbulent first frame. From the jump, it seemed as though the Jags were playing harder and it was no secret that they had the early momentum. After an early Jags pick-6 followed up by a Jamal Agnew touchdown, it seemed like the Jaguars were about to run away with the game. Luckily, one Jalen Alexander Hurts had other plans.
As the Eagles offense began to pour it on in the second quarter we saw a change in the play of the team. The hesitant tackles and weak running we had seen in the first quarter were gone and they were back to the hard-nosed Eagles squad that we all know and love. While there is no telling what was said on the Birds sideline, the one thing we can say is that whatever it was, it worked. As the game went on, worries soon evaporated and we were all able to enjoy the true wonder that is the 2022 Eagles.
It is no secret at this point that this Eagles team is something special. They have shown it to us in nearly every facet of their game, now they need to execute on it. Which to this point they have obviously done to perfection, but it is a long season and four games does not and will not define it when this is all said and done.
While we saw some great things from this team today there is obviously some housekeeping to clear up. Jordan Mailata and Darius Slay both left today's game with injuries, while Slay would return, while Mailata would not see the field after injuring his shoulder on an attempt to tackle a streaking Andre Cisco during an eventual Jags pick-6. Coach Nick Sirianni said after the game that Mailata would go for an MRI tomorrow but no other details were given. There was little news on Darius Slay who returned briefly after halftime before being lifted again. Hopefully, it was only precautionary, but only time will tell.
Next up the Birds will make their first big trip of the year out to Arizona to take on the Cardinals in Scottsdale. Kyler Murray’s squad is 2-2 through the first four weeks of the season and is struggling to keep its head above water in an ultra-competitive NFC West. So the Eagles will look to capitalize and hopefully advance to 5-0 on the year. But for now wherever you are, good morning, good afternoon, and good night, and of course Go Birds!
