ST LOUIS - Phillies fans have waited 10 long, grueling years to watch what we saw today. Meanwhile, the manner in which this team carried out the victory made it all the more worth it.
After a heartwrenching 7 innings of scoreless play, which saw the Phillies offense go quiet, tallying only two hits across 8 frames. The Cardinals would opt to pinch hit rookie Juan Yepez, and the young buck would deliver, blasting a volley into the left-field bleachers. Seeing the manner in which the Phils offense had played with to that point, along with the Cards shutdown closer Ryan Helsley getting the call midway through the 8th, it seemed that it may have been all she wrote for game 1, But the Phillies had other plans.
It all started with a JT Realmuto single to center, then everything came crashing down for the Red Birds. Two straight walks, followed by an RBI HBP to Alec Bohm would make it a 2-1 ballgame with still only one out. Then 3 consecutive singles from Segura, Marsh, and Stott would give the Phils the lead at 5-2. Finally, Kyle Schwarber would knock in the last run of the inning with a Sac Fly to centerfield.
Though Zach Eflin would allow a run in the 9th making it 6-3, the Cards would go down quietly and the Phillies would emerge from Busch Stadium victorious.
Now, the focus of the city, fans, and of course the team will shift to tomorrow night and the right arm of Aaron Nola who will be towing the rubber for the Fightin Phils. With a win in game 2, the Phillies will be awarded a trip to the NLDS and of course, that would mean at least one home playoff game in South Philadelphia. So it is safe to say that the steaks are high, heading into a possible deciding contest. But for now wherever you may be, good morning, good afternoon, and good night, and of course Go Phils!
So many aspects to the good consequences of this fought-for win! Evidence of the come-back capability, the never-give-up mentality and self-confidence of young contributors. It’s fun to be a Philly sports fan this year. Wish my father-in-law Joe Ranieri was here watching these games with me. May he Rest In Peace and smile, seeing his Great Grandsons’ gear.
