Day two of the MLB Draft is always an interesting crapshoot to put it kindly. Between low end D1 guys to some former big names that fell off and prep guys who have a big decision to make between taking a gamble at the pros or heading off to college for the next two seasons or even more - you never know who your club may pick. The Phils wrapped up their second day of the draft with a couple promising picks and a few question marks, dive into it all right here.

Round 3 - Pick 100 — John Spikerman, OF, Oklahoma

Age: 21

DOB: 04/02/2003

HT: 6’ 0”

BATS: S

THROWS: R

WT: 190

Seems like a guy who can move around the diamond defensively. He’s really fast and legs out a ton of hits, he should have some good contact. Definitely not a lot of power, but things could get better - he’s not all too raw after playing at powerhouse Oklahoma for a few years. He has struggled with injuries in the past which will be something to watch for him in the pros. He batted .368 with a .971 OPS with Oklahoma last year as a junior. Look for him to fill in the outfield as yet another strong centerfield prospect for the Phils.

Round 4 - Pick 130 — Carson DeMartini, 3B, Virginia Tech

Age: 21

DOB: 12/27/2002

HT: 6’ 0”

BATS: L

THROWS: R

WT: 197

A guy with a lot of questions but a good amount of upside to upend it. He’s got power but after a surgically repaired shoulder prior to the 2024 season DeMartini has struggled to find the groove he was once in. The biggest tool he possess however is undoubtedly his power, that’s what he’s getting picked for and it’ll be interesting to see if that translates. Saw a serve drop off in his average in 2024 but a spike in power with 21 home runs but his AVG dropping from .323 to .269. The infielder has played around the diamond but prefers to stick around third base. He’ll be another interesting name that isn’t going to have too much time to grow as a three year college guy, look for his name in A ball next year.

Round 5 - Pick 162 — Carter Mathison, OF, Indiana

AGE: 21

DOB: 01/26/2003

HT: 6’ 2”

BATS: L

THROWS: L

WT: 215

Another plus power guy but this time it’s an outfielder. Mathison out of Indiana is an interesting guy, he had a great freshman year with the Hoosiers but struggled in wood bat summer leagues and his performances only got worse throughout college with his average stooping down to .260 in his junior year while only hitting 13 home runs. He can play the entire outfield and projects decently well out there. I’d look for him to get his shot in FCL but if he doesn’t impress early on it won’t be long until this guy is dropped from the system.

Round 6 - Pick 192 — Kodey Shojinaga, C, University of Kansas

B/T: R/R

HT: 5’ 10”

WT: 190

Shojinaga is a great hitter from Kansas, he’s got some power and gets on base a ton. He’s a real hit or miss guy. It's all about if his intangibles will get through to the next level. He only played one game as a catcher in college, mainly playing in the infield - strange that he’s listed as a catcher. The Hawaiian will be an interesting name to watch in the FCL for the Phillies this year.

Round 7 - Pick 222 — Joel Dragoo, OF, Presbyterian

B/T: R/R

HT: 6’ 2”

WT: 200

Was the best player for Presbyterian last season he batted .303 with 28 home runs in his career with them. A low end D1 guy, Dragoo batted .401 with a 1.305 OPS last season along with an astounding 18 home runs. He also batted .231 for Mahoning Valley in the MLB Draft league this year. He’s yet another outfield bat with potential for the Phillies but he is also yet another older guy so it’ll be interesting to see how he progresses for the club.

Round 8 - Pick 252 — Cameron Hill, P, Georgia Tech

B/T: L/L

HT: 6’ 6”

WT: 215

Comes from a good school but that’s about it, he struggled in two years at Georgia Tech but came in as the number three lefty in Georgia as a freshman. Really struggled in high school with a five ERA across three seasons, he did well in summer ball but nothing too much else is impressive he was really disappointing in nearly all fields. It’ll be interesting to see how this guy translates to the minors, I can’t see him staying around for too long.

Round 9 - Pick 282 — Marcus Morgan, RHP, Iowa

AGE: 21

DOB: 12/27/2002

HT: 6’ 3”

BATS: R

THROWS: R

WT: 210

Had an amazing freshman year for the Hawkeyes but came back in 2024 and struggled mightily as scouts critiqued how Iowa worked on and tinkered with his pitching. This is another shot in the dark as many picks are at this point in the draft.

Round 10 - Pick 312 — Brady Day, SS, Kansas State

B/T: L/R

HT: 6’ 0”

WT: 190

Nice infielder for the Phils in this spot, he played well for Kansas State in three seasons with them. Batted .302/.408/.433 across all amateur levels with a .840 OPS, he’ll be an interesting one to watch. Hopefully a nice hitter who can come up and make some noise for the Phils.

Day three of the MLB Draft will take place tomorrow; Tuesday (7/16) with the Oakland A’s going on the clock with the first selection of the 11th round at 2:00 PM ET.
