PHILADELPHIA. PA - It was exactly 21 days since the Flyers last won a Hockey game. Since that point, the Orange and Black had faltered following their scorching 7-3-2 start - going just 0-7-3 in their last 10 tying the franchise record for consecutive losses. There was no way the Flyers were ever going to win with their former style of play, so it was a welcome sight to see such a rejuvenated and refined squad hit the ice tonight.
Over the past month, the Flyers had struggled to hold offensive possession or keep the puck at their own end long enough to formulate plays, obviously resulting in a lack of goals. However, tonight, the script was flipped. The constant movement of the puck and aggressiveness on attacks helped the Flyers to maintain possession for over half of the contest, this resulted in some of their highest team SOG numbers of the season. There are still changes that need to be made and kinks that need to be sorted through, but if the Flyers can maintain an offensive consistency such as this, we may be seeing a few more goals than we have in the past few matches.
One of the other most noticeable differences between tonight and other prior games was the aggressive defense we saw forced onto the New York attack. It felt as though the Flyers D was always swarming the puck and when they weren’t able to sustain a lead on it, they formed somewhat of a shell around Carter Hart which helped to keep multiple shots out on a few occasions.
These changes are things that can happen on a night-by-night basis, so it is certainly by all means not time to get all too excited just yet. That being said, if the Flyers are able to maintain this level of play it will no doubt to higher numbers in the left hand column. But if they want to keep the positive vibes flowing, they are going to need to down the defending Stanley Cup champions - The Tampa Bay Lightning this Thursday night down at WFC.
