SOUTH PHILADELPHIA - The Phillies acquired Outfielder Junior Marin from the Kansas City Royals along with cash considerations in exchange for 2018 12th-round selection RHP James McArthur, Per Scott Lauber of the Philly Inquirer.
McArthur, selected 347th overall back in 2018, never seemed to come into his own during a strenuous tenure with the Fightins. The Ole Miss product boasted a 9-21 record with a 4.36 ERA, 1.36 WHIP, and .248 BAA across five seasons in the Phillies organization. This all came as the righty dealt with an Elbow Stress Reaction that left McArthur sidelined for the majority of 2022, limiting him to just 13 games for AA Reading.
McArthur’s future certainly looked bleak in Red Pinstripes, his subtraction will make room for some of the Phils more promising prospects who will look to get the call from AA and High A at a later point this season.
In exchange for McArthur’s services, the Phillies acquired 19-year-old Outfielder Junior Marin along with cash considerations.
Marin, a product of Venezuela appeared in 62 games through two seasons of Rookie Ball where he batted .348 with a .979 OPS across 92 ABs. He will be optioned to the Phils Rookie Ball FCL (Florida Coast League) team for the start of 2023.
The former Royal is a low-risk high-reward investment for the Phils who have an opportunity to come away with a steal if Marin works out in the long run.
In the meantime, the Fightins will face off with the Toronto Blue Jays tomorrow back at CBP with a 6:40 pm start time. They’ll look to start the week off with a win before heading back out west for a stint with the Rockies.
