PHILADELPHIA, PA - The Phillies shut down a high flying Los Angeles Dodgers team with ease Tuesday night in South Philadelphia with a 10-1 win.
Zack Wheeler came into the night guns blazing, striking out a red hot Shohei Ohtani to lead off the ballgame. He then worked his way into some trouble before lifting his way out after striking out James Outman to close the first frame.
In the top of the second it was the Phillies defense that made things difficult for the Dodgers as Wheeler was able to work through another inning with relative ease.
Then in the bottom of the second Rafael Marchán got things started with an RBI single to make it 1-0 Phillies. Kyle Schwarber, in his first game back, quickly followed things up with a two-run single to bring the score to 3-0 Phillies at the end of two.
Despite Schwarber’s success however, Bryce Harper struggled to get all too much going in his first game back - striking out against Bobby Miller in the bottom of the third.
In the bottom of the fourth however it was Johan Rojas who got the party going with an RBI single to bring the score to 4-0 Philadelphia.
Trea Turner then took it to another level with his grand slam (8) off Miller which brought the score to 8-0 Phillies.
Bryson Stott then closed out the inning with a home run (6) of his own off Miller to make it 9-0 Phillies. Stott’s blast made it a staggering 432 feet with an exit velocity of 105.3 MPH while getting 86 ft. up approaching the wall that was 358 ft. from home plate.
Cavan Biggio took his shot and put the Dodgers on the board in the top of the 5th inning with a solo home run (3) off Wheeler to make it 9-1 Phillies.
However, Wheeler would then exit the game in the 5th due to apparent lower left back injury.
In the bottom of the sixth more trouble was averted by the Dodgers as Outman laid out for an amazing diving grab to set down Alec Bohm.
The Phils then took their shot at getting out of a jam as Gregory Soto escaped a bases loaded situation in the top of the seventh when he got out of Outman.
In the bottom of the seventh, Brandon Marsh closed things out for the Phillies with a solo home run (8) off Michael Petersen to make it 10-1 Phillies. The homer went 407 FT. with a 104.0 MPH exit velocity and reached a height of 79 FT. as it eclipsed the 358. FT wall.
The Phils didn’t however just couldn’t escape without something else to worry about as Johan Rojas exited the games after being hit by a Petersen pitch in the bottom of the seventh.
Enrique Hernandez then took the mound for the Dodgers and ended the seventh inning with a Kyle Schwarber pop out.
Marsh saved José Ruiz from some trouble in the top of the ninth when he threw out Will Smith with a rocket from left field to give the Phils two outs in the inning.
Ruiz then worked to close out the game with a Chris Taylor ground out.
BSS Phillies POTG: Trea Turner
Turner led the way for the Phillies with a grand slam in the fourth inning to break the game open.
WIN: Zack Wheeler, 10-4 (5.0 IP, ER, 7 K, 2 BB)
LOSS: Bobby Miller, 1-2 (4.0 IP, 9 ER, 2 K, 3 BB)
Fueled by their four run fourth inning and a strong night from Zack Wheeler - the Phils came away with an impressive win against the Dodgers that should give them a boost heading into this final stretch before the All-Star break. A stretch that will continue tomorrow night with another matchup with the Dodgers for a 7:05 PM first pitch on ESPN and 94 WIP.
