PHILADELPHIA. PA - The Phillies fell 4-1 to the Cincinnati Reds at Citizens Bank Park as the rain fell consistently throughout the day.

It was only because of a brief period of dry weather that the clubs were able to get the game that was originally scheduled for 1:05 PM and later moved to 4:05 PM at around 8:00 PM. The three-hour and fifty-five minute rain delay made for the sixth longest in Phillies history.

When the game finally did get underway it was Zack Wheeler who towed the rubber for the Phils, carrying the team through six innings of three-run ball - though only one of those runs was earned after a few tough errors from the Phils infield.

Christian Encarnacion-Strand got the scoring started for the Reds in the top of the third inning as he knocked in a double that scored Nick Martini and Jonathan India, giving Cincinnati an early 2-0 lead.

Elly De La Cruz would follow that up with an RBI double of his own in the top of the sixth to give the Reds a 3-0 lead.

In the bottom half of the inning, the Phillies got their only run of the day off the bat of Kyle Schwarber who hammered his second home run of the year to right field.

After the Phils loaded the bases with two outs at the end of the inning, Brandon Marsh came to the dish but would pop out to Reds third baseman Jeimer Candelario to end the Phils potent threat.

In the top of the ninth, the Reds were sure to add some insurance as Spencer Steer continued to punish the Phillies with a one-out triple to right field. His pinch hitter Bubba Thompson would later be sent home on a Nick Martini RBI single, scoring 4-1 Reds.

With the loss, the Phillies fall to 2-4 on the season and sit in third place in the NL East behind the Atlanta Braves and Washington Nationals.

The Phils will meet with the Nats beginning on Friday as they head to the nation’s capital. Game one will begin at 6:45 PM from Nationals Park and can be seen on NBCSP+ and heard on 94.1 WIP.
