New York City. NY - The Phillies lost their 4th straight contest to the New York Yankees 8-1 in the Bronx Monday night, starter Taijuan Walker allowed four runs on four hits in just 4.1 innings of work during his Phillies debut.
Coming off an ugly three-game sweep to the Texas Rangers many hoped a change of scenery would help to flip the script on the Phillies early season woes.
Spoiler alert, it didn’t.
The Yankees would quickly jump out to a 2-0 lead in the first behind the bats of Giancarlo Stanton and Gleyber Torres. Though as the Phillies offense continued to stumble, Yunior Marte would make his formal introduction to the Phils faithful surrendering five runs in the 5th inning before being pulled.
The struggles wouldn’t end there as the Phillies offense would neglect to gain any leverage throughout the final four innings of play, totaling only four hits from that point forward.
One of the few bright spots in red pinstripes tonight was the play of Alec Bohm. The 26-year-old stud Third Basemen went 3-4 with a double, while also scoring the team’s only run of the night.
This is nothing new for Bohm who has been on fire through the first four games of the year. The former third-overall pick is batting .467 with a 1.300 OPS during only 15 ABs in 2023. Not to mention some top-tier defensive efforts at the hot corner, highlighted by an amazing snag during Saturday afternoon’s contest in Arlington.
While individual success is nothing to scoff over, the Phillies are still slipping and as time goes on it becomes more and more difficult to climb back to a place of leverage in the National League standings. As cliche as it has become, it’s hard to debate the “162 games quote”, especially to this point in the year. But for now, the best any team can do is focus on the job at hand, that being the next game on the schedule. For the Phillies, they will prepare to once again faceoff with the Bronx Bombers in NYC tomorrow night back at Yankee Stadium for a 7:05 pm EST First Pitch on NBCSP.
