PHILADELPHIA, PA - The Phillies came away with yet another sweep Wednesday afternoon as they shutout the Milwaukee Brewers 2-0 at Citizens Bank Park.
Aaron Nola headed the effort, the righty went seven innings of two hit one run baseball while striking out five Brewers batters.
Nola took home his eighth win of the season and lowered his season ERA to 2.77.
It was Jeff Hoffman who got the hold (9) and Jose Alvarado who got the save (11) out of the bullpen for the Phillies and combined to let up just a hit - helping to complete the shutout.
Offensively, Nick Castellanos gave the Phillies all they needed for the evening. The Phillies right fielder blasted his eighth home run of the season in the bottom of the fifth to give Philly a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the ninth with a runner on and one away, in a big spot Jose Alvarado recorded the second of his three consecutive strikeouts to close out the game when he K’d Christian Yelich for the second out. Preceding to make quick work of Willy Adames to end the game.
With the win, the Phillies move to 44-19 on the season and gain a 8.0 game lead over the idle Atlanta Braves in the NL East. They continue to hold the best record in the National League and now jump ahead of the Yankees for the best record in Baseball by just a half game.
The club is now 6-4 in their last ten games and will ride a three game win streak across the pond where they’ll take on the New York Mets in London, England at London Stadium for a 1:10 PM EDT first pitch this Saturday in the MLB’s London Series.
